Project Description

WRITING / EDITING

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I was an environmental journalist, writing a few local stories for various local publications in Ottawa, Canada.

I was just starting out as a writer, so I’m not ashamed to admit that I said YES to ANYTHING, including an assignment to write an article where I had to interview a young mother about reusable cotton diapers and feminine hygiene products (she didn’t seem to feel awkward about the conversation at all!).

I subsequently began full-time work at the Solar Energy Society of Canada Inc. (SESCI), as “Communications Officer,” working in the office during business hours in addition to my position as Assistant Editor and Staff Writer for several lead stories and the regular section, “R&D Report” at SESCI’s bimonthly magazine, “SOL”.

We used cutting-edge desktop publishing software at the time: XEROX Ventura Publisher (*sigh* look, Corel let this die, too).XEROX VENTURA PUBLISHER

I remember we had to use a thing called a “SIZING WHEEL” to specify photo aspect ratio and sizing to send along to the publishing house.

It is fun to remember those days.

I can’t believe they are still selling these “Proportional Scales” … but here (below) is a photo that looks just like the one we used, as I remember.
